SiOC glass is used by to make thermal coatings for the Space Shuttle. Other areas of applications for SiOC glasses are anodes for lithium ion rechargeable batteries, low-k films for microelectronics, oxidative resistant coatings, and ceramic matrix
composites. A major problem with SiOC glass is that it is brittle and can
fracture easily. It was attempted to incorporate carbon nanotubes to increase
the fracture toughness.
Figure 1 shows fractured surface without CNT, scan size 3x3micron.
